The Choir’s Festival Concert is held in April each year – this year it’s on Saturday the 21st – and, as on so many occasions over the years, we are again going to enjoy Nottingham’s incredible Albert Hall.

Festival is the time when we unwrap this year’s repertoire – usually fifteen or so pieces – some completely new, others returning by popular request. This year’s list includes several numbers especially requested for the Choir’s Autumn visit to the ‘other’ Albert Hall in London – Festival of Brass and Voices – in aid of Cancer Research.

Drum Blondes, pictured on the right, are making a welcome return appearance as our guest artistes.

Festival is also the event at which the Music Makers Award will be presented to the 2012 winner who will perform to showcase their musical talents. Watch this space for announcement of this year’s winner!

Tickets are now on sale at £13.50 and are available from:

Gordon Carrington on 0115 844 0158, our dedicated ticket email hotline or you can contact us

Singing to a full house always gives the members a great feeling. St. James Church at Mapperley, was packed to the rafters on Saturday and the concert went very well. The audience particularly appeared to enjoy the choir’s rendition of Schneewalzer (The Snow Waltz) in which they were asked to participate.

The Carlton Brass Band were also well received, performing a selection of Christmas music and playing along to the singing of carols. Howard Ketton compered the concert in his own unique style with readings, jokes and quotations added all for good measure.

The Choir are enjoying the Christmas festivities but after Christmas we will start practicing for the Festival Concert which will be held once again this year at the Albert Hall Nottingham. The concert will be on the 21 April, please add this date to your diary and watch this space for the date when the tickets will be released.

CARLTON MVC has launched a new Music Makers award! The picture, taken by Mr. Peter Jordan, is of some of the guests at the launch along with Mr. & Mrs John Brydon who are sponsoring the trophy.

How we are developing the ‘new’ Music Makers Award in 2012

The choir is eager to promote the Award more widely and to enlist the support of others who can help us achieve the aim of moving it into a new, exciting phase.

Previously, the Award has been available exclusively to students from just one post-16 college. For some time we have wanted to extend the opportunity to many more and are now pleased to announce that henceforth it will be open to all students aged 16 to 19 educated in any Nottinghamshire school or college.

For the first time the Trophy, which is kept by the winner for twelve months, will be supplemented by the award of a prize of £500 which the recipient can put towards furthering his or her involvement in music. For this, the choir is grateful for the kind support and financial backing of John Brydon who has for some time had an interest in the project. The winner’s school or college will also receive £100 as a small ‘thank you’ from the choir for supporting its student.

The winner will continue to receive the Music Makers Trophy and perform at our Festival Concert in April and hopefully on other occasions too!

After ten years in the post, Ann Swift has resigned as Chair of the Carlton Male Voice Choir, Ladies Support Group.

The Ladies of the support group and all the Choir members acknowledge the tremendous work that Ann has done over the years. The Ladies raise much appreciated funds for the benefit of the Choir and we offer Ann and them our grateful thanks. Ann is still a member of the LSG but taking more of a back seat. The newly elected Chair is to be Sandra Bannerman we all wish her good luck in her new position.

The picture shows Ann being presented with a bouquet of flowers from a committee member Audrey Reast.

This picture shows most of the Ladies (but not all) during the Choir’s recent trip to Scotland.

It is thanks to the hard work of the LSG and their fund raising activities that the Choir was able to offer participating singing members, a subsidy to travel.

The Choir performed three concerts during the trip to Scotland. The first concert was at St. Matthew’s Church in Perth, where we were privileged to sing alongside the East Fife Male Voice Choir -a great Choir with wonderful harmonies. At the second concert, held in the Holy Trinity Church, St. Andrews the Choir was welcomed and led in to the venue by a pipe band, a thrill to the Choir and our supporters. The organisers had provided “three up and coming” young artistes for this concert, all of whom had lovely voices giving us very rich and entertaining performances. The third concert was at our hotel, The Angus Hotel in Blairgowrie. We performed in the ballroom to a packed audience where many expressed their enjoyment and appreciation.

All the proceeds from these concerts went to the MacMillan Nurses Trust, and over the three concerts a sum of approximately £2500 was raised for this very worthy cause.

The Choir members and our travelling friends met with fellow choristers and their partners from across the border and a very friendly atmosphere ensued throughout the trip – not just during the concerts but with everyone we met. The hotel is to be recommended, the food was exceptional, the staff were brilliant and the rooms were spotless. – Our thanks goes out to them and to Skills Coaches, to Dave and to Lee our drivers, all who helped make the trip a total success.
